The Importance of Spending Time with God

by - Saturday, August 01, 2020

Spending time with God is the foundation of our beings as Christians. Like the air that we breathe and like communication to any relationship, intimate and regular fellowship with God is the life of our faith. Without air we cannot breathe and without communication, any relationship can die.

Acts 17:28 (NKJV) for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.

I wrote a Daily Devotional in 2018 to encourage the reader to get into an important routine of spending time with God. Not many Christians understand that God has given us authority on this earth and when we cover things in prayer, it gives Him permission to deal with them. From the beginning of creation, God has given us dominion.

Genesis 1:26 (NKJVThen God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

Prayer works and changes things, as long as we are praying according to His will. As Christians we are all supposed to be prophetic. The Bible is prophetic as is speaks of things to come. Thus, you should be able to start with being the prophet over your own life and know where you are heading, without confusion. A closeness with God and a sensitivity to His spirit will allow you to be more likely to pray according to His will as you are in line with Him and your spirit is one with Him. Please note that there is a difference between being prophetic and having the gift of being a Prophet or Prophetess, specifically.

Remember! We have the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, dwelling within us. Know what you carry, the authority, power and anointing and live accordingly.

The earth was created with words from God, he said let there be light and there was light. This should show you that words become things so you should pray, read the Bible and declare positive things over your life.

Praying in tongues is something that charges you up spiritually. It is more powerful that what most people know. I challenge you to pray in tongues for an hour a day, over your own life and see how spiritually charged and sharp you will be.

Matthew 26:40-41 (NKJV) Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

When you pray in the spirit, you speak mysteries. Since the spiritual realm is ahead of time and knows what is to come, it is vital that you are speaking in tongues. If you do not know how to, speak with your Pastor. I was advised by a church member to keep praying for the gift until I got it. And sure enough, I got it.

I Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV) For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

The Bible encourages us to always be praying. There are different types of prayers too which are supplication, intersession and praying in the spirit. Praying in our own understanding also is recommended.

I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

God can only work with your level of maturity in the word of God! This means you should strive to study your Bible and know for yourself about this God that many have spoken about!! When you pray you should also pray based on the word of God. For example, I can pray Psalms 103 over my life.

Faith is based on the information that we know about God. Our information and knowledge in scripture fuels our faith. So lacking that knowledge will make our faith weaker. People think that faith is something like a muscle to be strengthened or is there just because we believe. But this is not the case - Romans 10:17(NKJV) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

You will notice that, when you spend intimate time with God and really open up to Him, He will tell you His secrets and give you clear direction on your unique situation. I am sure that you would not tell your secrets to someone you did not know well!

We are under the covenant of grace and mercy so there is nothing you can do to make God love you more. This is rather for self-development, basically for our own good to be effective and grounded Christians, with the ability for us to be resilient to serve people, bounce back from temptation and life’s challenges. You also have the ability to turn things around in the spiritual realm, for it to go in your favour.

God has already defeated the enemy, so all the enemy can do is suggest nonsense to you. But when you are sensitive to the spirit of God, your discernment will be sharp. The enemy has no power, we have the authority. So rise up and pray and spend time with God.

Luke 22:46 (NKJV) Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
