The Importance of Spending Time w/God

by - Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Hey Ladies, I hope you are all doing well. This topic is very important. Spending time with God sets the tone for the whole day and has an impact on how we react to certain situations. I recently did a video giving practical tips on how I spend time with God as I go about my day (see below). Today I will share some tips on how I am improving and being more intentional about my quiet time, as time goes on.

We have to remember that it is a spiritual battle out here. When we give our lives to Christ we are constantly being attacked in every area of our lives. We are as strong as our prayer lives. This gives us a strong foundation for us to stand on and also increases our confidence knowing that we are praying to a living God.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

2 Corinthians 10:4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

-       I was having a problem with staying awake whilst praying due to a long day at work.
-       I was not spending sufficient time with the Lord as I woke up: I still prayed but I felt it was too brief.

At the beginning of the year, Heather Lindsey held a journal challenge where she challenged us to write out our prayers to the Lord for the whole month. This really helped me to put more of my senses into spending time with God – because I am writing things out, my hands, eyes and brain are more engaged so I am less likely to fall asleep.

Thankfully, I rely on this method of spending time with God on some days. It is great to look back on and see how God answered my prayer or maybe show to my future husband (who knows!).

I decided to set my alarm about 15 minutes before I wake up to pray longer and read my devotional. As time goes on I plan to extend this.

We have to remember that many people’s salvation and spiritual breakthroughs are on the back of our prayer lives. We have to put on our big girl pants and stop letting things distract us. I hold my hand up, I get distracted and lazy. I do not spend as much time as I should sometimes. But on the flip side, I have made the decision to spend time in prayer daily. It does not have to turn into a competition on how long you can spend with God, if you have a solid and focused 20 minutes with him is better than a shallow hour. Remember, God wants us but does not need us. So spending time with Him is for our own good. Here is an example of my prayer life in a day that I try to follow:

Wake up – Pray, thanking for a new day etc.
Before I eat breakfast – Pray
Before I leave the house – Pray, asking Him to cover me and protect me as I go to work and leaving my house and family in His hands
On the way to work – Read daily devotional and/or bible
When I get to work – Pray, thanking Him for journey mercies
At lunchtime – Pray thanking Him for the day so far and pray for any people or things that arise, ask for strength for rest of day
When I get home – Thank Him for the day
After dinner – Spend time with Him in worship and prayer
Before bed – Bible study and prayer

Sometimes these are brief moments with God but I am trying more and more to make it more of a deeper and intentional encounter. We are as close to God as we want to be, so it is up to us to make the changes and the effort. There is no such thing as being too busy, since He is the one that gave us the world and everything in it, that we are getting busy in. It is so important that we give our time to Jesus for Him to fill us up and be more like Him.

Sometimes, simply being in His presence still and quiet, allows for us to hear from Him. It is not always about us talking but sometimes being patient and quiet. As the Holy Spirit leads and guides of course.

By nature we have wicked hearts:
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

But we serve a Holy and Mighty God. So the more we spend time in His presence, the more He will reveal our wicked ways and help us to overcome by delivering us from various things.

Another thing is that Jesus went away and spent hours with God.

Luke 6:12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

Let us use this example to have better prayer lives. If you truly believe that Jesus is the name above all names, take the time to plan how you will spend more time with Him. When I do not spend much time with Him in His word, I become like my flesh, impatient, easily angered etc, which is a playground for the enemy. It should not be so. It is a daily decision to pick up our cross and continue to follow Him. If you have really decided and are not planning to turn back, Lets do better sisters.
