Putting God First Always

by - Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Hey guys, I just want to encourage you to always put the King first. Though matter what. NOTHING is more important than Him, so therefore we need to make sure we spend a lot of time before Him. What is life without Him? nothing. Until I became saved I was lost without Him. Therefore, strengthening yourself spiritually is key to developing a meaningful relationship with Him. I have realised that spending more time with Him helps us to make better decisions, keeping us in line with His will. This is because our heart is more sensitised to His word and what pleases Him. On the other hand, spending time away from Him hardens hearts. This is a dangerous place to be, as it is like turning your back on Him. And that only leads to being a slave to sin. After all, if you really think about it, a relationship with Jesus is the most important one that you will have. So always be intentional about spending time with Him.

There is no excuse as to why we do not spend enough time with God. You are either a Christian or not. The Bible warns against lukewarm Christians [Revelations 3:15]. We are able to spend time on things/people that we like, but when it comes to Him, many claim that they do not have the time. Why is this? are we putting value on the things that have no meaning in life? If you really think about it, we are temporarily in this world and we will leave all the things we worked for behind. In the past I would end the day with prayer. But what I hated was the fact that I would fall asleep praying. If I did not fall asleep at work, I do not see why I would fall asleep praying. I decided to become a more bold Christian and take my quiet time with him seriously, by praying and studying the Bible.

If we look at the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, it speaks about the fact that everything is meaningless. We work hard only to leave all our possessions behind. That really puts things into perspective. We want this and we want that, but really we should be fixated on Jesus FIRST. Then and only then, whatever else shall be added onto us [Matthew 6:33]. Ecclesiastes shows us that we should really be focusing on Jesus our King, who gave us the biggest sacrifice of dying on the cross.

Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun [Ecclesiastes 2:11].

There is no reason to put our King at the bottom of the list, He should be our whole lives. He has so much love for us and He never changes. How great is our God... Amen! As disciples of Jesus, we must call upon him not just when we need something, but all of the time. It is very important that we are aware of this.

I love the fact that Jesus accepts us how we are. We do not need to do anything fancy to be loved by Him, but by just being ourselves - He loves us the way we are. We just need to follow His word [John 14:15].

Below are a few tips on spending time with God:

Start the day off with prayer. It does not have to be extensive, but thanking God for blessing you with a new day is vital. Praying for the people around you is the best gift that you can give them. You can even go as far as waking up extra early, just to spend time in His presence. However, do what works best for you.
Before different things that you do, pray and give thanks. Eg. I thank God for breakfast, for hot water, for a bath etc.. The little things that we often take for granted, that not everyone has.
Before leaving the house, pray. Pray for a productive day and a safe journey.
At work or wherever you go, pray throughout the day. Sometimes when I get into difficult situations at work, I pray for patience and a calm spirit. You can always read your Bible on your lunch break if you feel that that is what you want to do (remember the devil is waiting for any opportunity for you to mess up, so maintaining that armour of God through prayer is the best way Ephesians 6:10-18).
Before I go to bed, I have my main prayer session with God, talking about my day and praying for people around me. I can pray for a stranger that I came across throughout my day if I feel compelled to. I made a covenant with God that I will read my Bible everyday, because it was an area of my life that I was slacking on.
   Church weekly
Bible studies on a regular basis, either with a group or alone.

I think it is important that our relationship with God does not just end in the Church, but that we go out of our way to make time for Him. I pray that you continue to be concerned with what is important - which is Jesus. Do not do it because you want something, but because of the deep love you have for our Saviour, our King and the only one who will never change.

Remember, we all have our part to play in the body of Christ, encouraging one another. So, by being closest to Him, we will stay in His will, thus doing all we can to help others renew their faith with Him. Let us be bold and unashamed in what we do as disciples of Christ.

God bless always.

  1. Really encouraging post! I like what you said about spending time with God/praying being "intentional".
